Study Verifies Safety and Pain Reduction During Prostate Biopsy With Periprostatic Nerve Block (PPNB)

Wednesday January 31, 2007
A meta-analysis of several studies has concluded that the use of periprostatic nerve block (PPNB) during prostate biopsy was safe and effective at reducing pain during the procedure.

The study also evaluated the safety and efficacy of intrarectal local anesthetic (IRLA) gel during a prostate biopsy. IRLA was found safe, but not statistically effective at pain reduction.

The authors of the report identified 20 studies to include in the meta-analysis which involved almost 1,700 patients comparing those who had received PPNB or a placebo injection.

To analyze IRLA vs. placebo, the authors identified five studies with 466 patients.

Analysis:: If your healthcare provider is considering a biopsy of your prostate, ask them if they will be giving you a PPNB. It does not increase side effects, and reduces your pain considerably.
