HIFU Treatment for Deemed Safe and Effective for Early Prostate Cancer

Thursday April 5, 2007
The results of a British study of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment for localized prostate cancer have shown it to be completely effective at maintaining potency and continence.

HIFU is a much less invasive alternative treatment for prostate cancers that have not developed beyond one lobe of the prostate. Other alternatives, including radical prostatectomy and brachytherapy involve side effects and invasive procedures.

The article, HIFU treatment for prostate cancer maintains 100% continence and potency, points out that these results prove that HIFU is a safe, effective, less-invasive alternative for men with early prostate cancer.

Dr. Hashim Uddin Ahmed, a clinical research fellow at the University College London Hospitals, presented the results of the Hemiablation trial at the Annual Misonix HIFU Society meeting at the end of March.
