Are Some Hospitals Better at Treating Prostate Cancer Than Others?

Wednesday November 5, 2008

Are some hospitals better at treating prostate cancer than others?

In general, hospitals that do more of a certain surgery or treat more patients with a certain disease typically have better results than hospitals that only treat a few patients each year. This is logical considering that the more practice a hospital staff has at handling a certain type of patient or disease, the better they should be at it. Obviously, this is not true 100% of the time and there are plenty of excellent smaller hospitals.

Additionally, some hospitals have developed extensive research programs and have recruited prostate cancer experts from around the world. These hospitals can often offer treatments and extra services that others cannot.

A number of rating systems have been developed to rank the best hospitals in a number of different fields including oncology and urology (fields closely involved with the treatment of prostate cancer). Links to these rankings are available on this site.

Overall, when choosing a hospital, a lot of different factors will weigh into your decision about where to go. Geography, reputation of the hospital, and a host of other issues are important to consider.
