New Drug May Offer More Hope for Men With Advanced Prostate Cancer

From Matthew Schmitz, M.D., About.com Guide   February 17, 2010

Follow me on:

Abiraterone, an experimental drug that is entering the later stages of clinical testing, has shown good results in men with advanced prostate cancer who have already been treated with both hormones and chemotherapy (specifically the chemotherapy agent docetaxel).

Abiraterone had previously shown promising results when given to men who had never underwent chemotherapy.

The new testing showed that men with advanced prostate cancer had significantly lower PSA levels and fewer circulating tumor cells when given abiraterone.

The results of this most recent study can be found in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
