A new study that looked at the outcomes for over 5200 men treated for prostate cancer with either open or laparoscopic prostatectomy has found that the two techniques are very comparable in terms of complications.
Researchers reviewed the cases of men who had clinically localized prostate cancer and were under the age of 66.
One significant difference that did emerge from the data was that men who underwent laparoscopic surgery had 1/3 shorter hospital stays and 1/4 less risk of urethral or bladder neck obstruction following surgery.
This study is set to be published in the Journal of Urology.
