The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently approved for sale the first generic version of the BPH drug tamsulosin, which has previously been sold only under the brand name Flomax.
Tamsulosin is part of a group of drugs known as alpha-blockers, which work by blocking receptors known as alpha-adrenergic receptors that regulate the contraction and relaxation of smooth muscle. By blocking these receptors, tamsulosin results in more complete relaxation of the smooth muscle of the prostate and, thus, better passage of urine through the urethra and out of the body.
