A phase III clinical trial evaluating the anti-prostate cancer drug zibotentan has been called off early due to evaluation by an independent advisory board which determined that the drug was unlikely to result in improved survival for men taking the drug.
The trial that was canceled was evaluating zibotentan as a stand-alone therapy, but a separate trial testing zibotentan combined with chemotherapy for men with advanced prostate cancer is still underway.
Zibotentan is a part of the family of drugs known as endothelin antagonists. The cellular pathway that is interrupted by this class of drugs has been a hot topic of research for several years as it is considered a possible way to halt or slow the progression of certain cancers, including prostate cancer.
