Barr Pharmaceuticals Releases Generic Proscar® (Finasteride) For Treatment of Benign Prostate Hyperplasia

Wednesday January 31, 2007
Barr Laboratories, Inc.,, a subsidiary of Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc. has announced that it has launched a generic version of Merck's Proscar (finasteride). The company launched after receiving final approval from the FDA.

Finasteride is indicated for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with enlarged prostates to improve symptoms and reduce the need for surgical procedures including transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and prostatectomy.

Analysis:
Proscar (finasteride 5 mg) is a popular prescribing option by physicians for symptoms associated with benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). The release of a generic version of the drug will allow more men access to it due to the lower price.
