Should the FDA revamp its approval process for prostate cancer treatments so successful treatments can more quickly be made available?

Background:

Current FDA standards require a treatment to provide a successful outcome based only on its ability to increase the five year long-term survival. This requires a wait of at least five years after a clinical trial is finished in order to gain approval.

Researchers have argued that a quick and significant drop in PSA levels seen continuously for a shorter period of time has already been proven through research to increase the long-term survival rate for prostate cancer-- therefore waiting for the long-term survival rate is unnecessary.
