Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test

From About.com

About.com Health's Disease and Condition content is reviewed by V.K. Gadi, MD

Definition: A blood test used to screen for the possibility of prostate cancer. PSA is normally in the blood in small amounts. However, higher than normal levels can indicate prostate inflammation, infection, or cancer.

To perform this test, a small vial of blood is drawn from the patient and sent to a lab.

The results of the test are expressed as a number, the PSA. In general, a lower PSA is better. Some medications can artificially reduce the levels of PSA so be sure to let your doctor know what you are taking. The PSA test is recommended annually for all men 50 and over. If a man is at higher risk, earlier screening is recommended.
