Definition:

Androgens, sometimes called "male hormones," are hormones that are produced naturally within the body.

Androgens are involved in numerous bodily functions, but one of their primary roles it to promote the development of male sexual characteristics.

The major androgen in humans is testosterone.

Androgens, including testosterone, are thought to be the major contributor to age-related enlargement of the prostate. They are also thought to play a major role in the growth and spread of prostate cancer.

Androgen-deprivation therapy (also known as "hormone therapy") is a form of treatment for prostate cancer.
