Definition:

A measure of the number of new cases of a disease found within a certain population over a certain period of time. Most commonly, a year is used as the period of time studied.

For example, if 100 people are in a population that is being studied and 5 of them have been diagnosed with prostate cancer during the past year, then the incidence of prostate cancer in that population is 5%.
