Definition:

Testosterone is a hormone that is produced naturally in the body. It is primarily made in the male testes, but is also made in small amounts within the adrenal glands and in the ovaries of women.

Testosterone plays a part in the development of male sexual characteristics, in male and female sex drive, and in numerous other bodily functions that doctors are learning more about.

Testosterone (and other male hormones known as androgens) are thought to be the primary cause of prostate enlargement as a man ages. It is also thought to be a contributor to the growth and spread of prostate cancer.

Hormone therapy for prostate cancer works by blocking the effects of male hormones such as testosterone.
