A medical oncologist is a physician who has participated in specialty training to diagnose and treat cancer. Their primary tools are systematic medicines to prevent recurrence or treat cancer that has spread beyond its original location.
A medical oncologist must complete four years of medical school, then typically complete six more years of residency training before working independently.
Medical oncologists are usually involved with prostate cancer only after initial treatments have not proven completely successful. Chemotherapy is used in prostate cancer after the cancer has spread to other areas of the body.
