Definition: The inflammation of the lining of the rectum that may result from an infection or other cause. Proctitis can be a common occurrence for prostate cancer patients who have had brachytherapy or external beam radiation treatment.

Patients with proctitis can experience rectal bleeding, fecal urgency and sometimes result in rectal ulceration.

Some research has shown that hyperbaric treatment can improve the status of proctitis in these patients.

Examples: My rectal bleeding is caused by proctitis from the brachytherapy I had for prostate cancer.
