The American Cancer Society has released its 2006 report estimating new cancer cases and deaths, and the numbers are hopeful.

New Cases

In 2006, an estimated 234,460 new cases of prostate cancer will be found. This makes prostate cancer the #1 cancer diagnosis for men accounting for 33 percent of all new cancer diagnoses. This detection rate is up by one percent from last year, hopefully due to increased screening compliance causing detection at an earlier stage.

Prostate Cancer Deaths

During 2006, it is estimated that 27,350 men will die of prostate cancer. This is down ten percent from 2005, to nine percent of all cancer deaths. Prostate cancer is now the third biggest cancer killer of men, down from second. This decrease in deaths can hopefully be attributed in part to higher long term success in prostate cancer treatments.
